1. What is project yes?
Project Youth Extension Service (YES) is a national service program engaging college students in service to meet the needs of military families facing deployment. Specifically, Project YES expands the resources of the DoD Military-Civilian Transition Office (MCTO), Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program (YRRP) and provides opportunities for students to give back to their communities and country through a year of service. Further, Project YES strengthens connections with the Cooperative Extension System while meeting the critical needs of communities with high rates of families impacted by deployments.

Project YES interns support Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program (YRRP) events throughout the nation and deliver specialized youth develop programs to children and youth of deployed family members. In-person events are typically conducted on weekends and may be conducted on or off military installations. Virtual events may also be facilitated through via on-line platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, etc.). Project YES youth programs are educational, interactive, hands on, fun activities that focus on leadership development, resilience/life skills, and STEM-related concepts.
3. Do interns need to be from a military family or have a 4-H background?
There is no requirement that interns be a member of a military family. Additionally, there is no requirement for them to be a veteran or have any active duty, Guard or Reserve experience. Likewise, there is no requirement that interns have a 4-H background.

5. Are interns required to move to NC State University or to miss any school?
The internship is designed for currently enrolled students and we strive to keep that in the forefront at all times. You'll be able to continue your academic studies while participating in Project YES events. There is no requirement to move to NC State University. Though you'll attend orientation in North Carolina, you'll return to your home university or college for the remainder of the internship.
6. What skills do I need?
Strong candidates for the internship program will have 1) previous experience working with children and youth, 2) excellent organizational and training skills, 3) skill in coordinating activities and establishing priorities, 4) excellent communication and presentation skills, and 5) the ability to analyze problems and make well-reasoned, sound decisions. NOTE: Experience with Cooperative Extension is desirable, but not required.
7. Will I receive special training to participate?
Project YES interns receive high-level training in leadership development, facilitation skills, youth development and applicable curriculum during the initial Orientation. They also receive on-going leadership and curriculum education throughout the year through a variety of distance and on-line educational venues.
8. How will travel be arranged?
Participating interns are available for nation-wide travel. Multiple factors (client requirements, intern academic schedule, etc) are considered when determining individual assignments. Travel expenses (travel, lodging, shuttles, etc.) are handled by the Project YES administrative assistant. Whenever possible, all expenses are paid in advance by Project YES. However, interns are highly encouraged to be prepared to handle any emergency situations that could not be pre-paid or foreseen in advance of travel.
9. How far will I have to travel?
Participating interns are available for nation-wide travel (to include US territories). Multiple factors (client requirements, intern academic schedule, etc) are considered when determining individual assignments.
10. How are weekend assignments determined?
Interns provide academic, work, and personal schedules to the Program Director. Requests for Project YES support are then compared to intern availability to determine the best match for location, cost, experience, etc. Every effort is made to maximize resources while ensuring interns receive opportunities to experience a variety of topics, locations, and leadership opportunities.
11. How long is the entire internship? Are they full time positions?
The internship requires a one-year commitment and requires a minimum of a 1-weekend per month commitment. Additionally, interns must attend a mandatory intern orientation and other training sessions, as required. (Interns must complete a North Carolina State University job application and are considered "contractors" for the duration of the internship).
12. How far in advance will I know my schedule?
Every effort is made to provide as much notice as possible. While some situations will allow 3-4 weeks advance notice, there are times that a shorter notification may occur. In cases of extremely short notification periods, interns will be contacted to discuss the logistics of the request before they are matched against the request.
13. Will I be traveling every weekend?
The program objective is to provide each intern the opportunity to complete one weekend per month. Based upon availability, individual preferences, funding and resources, more opportunities may be available. Coordination will be made with each intern prior to making increased teaching assignments. Project YES events may be supported through in-person and virtual platforms.
14. What sort of intern project is required?
Intern projects are individually tailored for each intern and complement each intern's individual career interest. Additionally, they promote both professional and service/community interests.
15. What is the mentor's role in relation to the intern?
Mentors provide guidance throughout the internship to further the intern’s future career interest. They also serve as a resource to assist with the required service- or community-based project.
16. Will I receive academic credit for the project or internship?
Interns interested in pursuing practicum or academic credit for the internship are responsible for coordinating all requirements with their university or college. The Project YES director will work with and provide program information to the intern. It is the intern's responsibility to provide specific internship credit requirements to their institution/program. Interns are responsible for any tuition/fees that may be required by their institution.
17. Do I have to own a car to participate in the project?
Interns must own or have ready access to a reliable vehicle that can be used to fulfill travel requirements. Interns must maintain a valid (current) driver’s license and a clean driving record. When required to drive a personal vehicle, mileage reimbursement is paid in accordance with NC State University standards.
18. Will I be paid for this internship?
In order to receive a Project YES stipend, interns must meet ALL of the following conditions:
1. Participate in at least 1 Project YES sanctioned event per month (in-person or virtual)
2. Actively participate in monthly Project YES team calls
3. Complete all required career-enhancing project (CEP) assignments and tasks during applicable timeframes (the CEP is applicable 6-8 months of the year).
When meeting all three criteria, interns may receive a $150/day stipend for each day spent actively providing youth development programming. Travel days and time spent in Project YES required training (annual orientation, mid-year training, etc.) does not qualify for payments of stipends.

Every effort is made to assign more than one intern to weekend events. Since interns are located throughout the nation, interns will frequently travel individually

22. Are interns required to purchase specific clothing or uniform items?
Interns are provided a Project YES name-tag and polo shirts upon completion of orientation. Optional clothing items are available for purchase by each intern.
